Prices & user-friendliness of imageJ competitors

Pierre Emmanuel
Hi,

I sometimes use imageJ for my studies. I actually follow a MoS in image
processing in Paris.
In my class of marketing I was asked to do a market analysis about image
processing softwares for biology use.

I would like to know if you can give me prices of some softwares:
- new softwares of Olympus: cell^A, cell^B, cell^D, cell^F & cell^p
- Leica IM 500 & IM1000 and the image processing module
- Zeiss Axiovision
- Improvision Volocity
- Metamorph
- Nikon Lucia

If some of you have used those software and can give me their feelings about
it, It will help me very much.

TIA
PE

Do we also get a MoS for doing your homework?

Not fair, she was just trying to get input.
Companies are often not forthcoming with pricing information.  "You
need to know how much??"
List prices are fantasy.

I would be interested in seeing her report.

Instead of questioning why a person would ask a question it is better
to give them the answer.

Cheers,
Mike

Hello I worked during 3 years for one of the companies listed bellow
(now I'm doing "public research")... The problem of prices is that all
these softwares have multiple modules and of courses the final price
could be very different from the list price because comercial issues.

I - Acqusition + Image data base + simple mesures is between "free" to
2500 €

II - I + Threshold + analyse particles + macros, etc (ImageJ like,
without all the advanced plugins, i.e. deconvolution, 3D) about 5000 €

III - I+II+ Deconvolution + 3D reconstruction, etc = more than 10000 €

This very very large... just I could suggest to ask a quotation but just
say that "this is for include in an application for a grant" in this
case you will have the raw listprice...

If you want the e-mail of people in charge of Image Analysis software in
these companies (France) contact me off-line, they are all very nice and
they will be very happy to help you !

All the best, Leon

I have used Matrox Inspector. It is quite user friendly. Cost is ~  $2500 US. I find that recently I can perform the same tasks with ImageJ. ImageJ  may not be as easy to use initially and may run a bit slower but for  the price, list support, available plugins and ability to modify, I find ImageJ to be superior.

I do not agree.
Plenty of people are willing to give plenty of help on this list, but personally, I want to know for what I am volunteering, if it involves more than a quick answer or hack. I get a lot of questions (mostly off-list) "Urgent help needed, please do X, need it for term paper by Y, signed student name Z". Personally, I am not very willing to help in such cases.

What is he (!) going to use the data for, with whom is he going to share it, will it be published? Is it just going to be a note sent to his teacher? What aspects of the software does he want to know about? Why not send out a small survey with 5 or 10 questions? Just one of these in one sentence would be enough.

Just my preference, enough said,
