Re: IMAGEJ Digest - 7 Feb 2011 to 8 Feb 2011 (#2011-36)[SEC=UNCLASSIFIED]

Goldsmith, Noel
Massimo asked about white LED lights

Massimo <[hidden email]>
Subject: Green background

Noel says.
The white light from a LED is achieved by illuminating a number of
fluorescent phosphors with UV light generated in the LED. These phosphors
each contribute a spectral line or number of spectral lines to the total
light and if the engineers have done OK you see white. However your eye and
vision system is very adaptive, whereas your digital camera can  only record
what it sees and it is up to you to produce an image of an empty slide and
use this to correct the white balance. Some cameras will do this if you tell
them they are looking at white. There may also be a menu item for colour
balance, if so try the one for fluorescent light. But as there are many
LED's which look white but may be warm white or cool white so there are
fluorescents of many colours of white. But if you have a white object or a
neutral grey object then it should be possible to produce a correction in an
imaging program which will render the green tint as neutral.
Good Luck
Noel
