I have no idea where your slow download rate comes from; I have a much higher one right as we speak. Ciao, Dscho |

All (I think),
I read Dscho's message and re-tried my download. I am still getting the real slow download speeds. Could it having something to do with my being in southern California and Fiji being in Germany along with Dscho? Are there any SoCal members out there who could try a download? David Webster |

All,
Wayne also reported low download speed from Fiji (mpi). I tried downloading a pdf from MPI and still get 25kb/sec. But downloads from TU Delf and INRIA both go at about 250 Kb/sec. So, there must be a problem with Germany, or at least MPI. How do we find out what it is? My ISP was not surprisingly unhelpful. David |

To all:
I am also in Southern California (San Fernando Valley) and I also use Road Runner. I use http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ to check speeds. My speed at home was measured now at 15,224 kbps download and 964 kbps upload. All,
Hmm! I am using Road Runner as well in the San Fernando Valley and got the same results with http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest. On the other hnd, Wayne Rasband got low (about 20kb/sec) transfer rates from Germany to Maryland. In any case, I hope it's not Road Runner as they have already told me it's not their problem. I have gotten higher rates from other places in Europe, but other downloads from Max Planck Institute were slow as well. Does nayone have another site Germany they can try? Does anyone know how we can find out where the problem is. To all:
Here is an excellent summary of all the factors involved in how fast a file is downloaded to your computer: * the power of your work station (computer) and software (browser) configuration * the (nominal) speed of your connection to your ISP (Internet service provider) * the Internet traffic between your ISP and the ISP for the site you are accessing * the speed of the connection between the "other" ISP and your target site * the power of the server hosting the pages or files you are interested in *The weakest link in this chain determines the final result *The above is from a discussion that, while 10 years old by Manfred Kuechler at Hunter College, CUNY, still summarizes the problems in an excellent manner.
